Alex brings a unique blend of policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, and on-the-ground program design to help organizations and leaders translate complex policy and technical issues into actionable strategies that accelerate sustainability goals.
Prior to joining Grove, Alex led the Energy Transition Initiative (ETI) at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Institute for the Environment. In this role, he oversaw the growth of ETI as a resource for the campus community and policymakers to identify creative strategies to guide the electricity sector toward an affordable, reliable, clean, and equitable future. Alex also planned and executed programming for the Southeast Energy and Environmental Leadership Forum (SEELF), an ongoing engagement with state environmental agencies and utility commissions in the Southeast. Through SEELF, he helped government officials understand the complex dynamics shaping the electricity sector, including new sources of and responses to unprecedented demand, federal environmental regulations, shifting Congressional priorities, and changes in energy economics and technologies.
While at UNC-Chapel Hill, Alex partnered with Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Energy, Sustainability & Environment and other organizations nationwide on the States Deployment Initiative, helping states fully capture the benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) myriad clean energy tax credits and programs such as EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG). He regularly interfaced with diverse constituencies, including federal agencies, on emerging climate and energy issues.
Previously, Alex was a Research Associate at the Stimson Center, a DC-based think tank, where he focused on sustainable development in fragile states, civilian protection, and Congressional responses to transnational security challenges. At Stimson, he co-authored Shifting Power: Transitioning to Renewable Energy in United Nations Peace Operations, a first-of-its-kind report examining renewable energy opportunities in UN missions deployed to fragile states.
Alex holds an M.A. in International Affairs from The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, where he focused on conflict resolution and environmental security, and a B.A. in International Relations from The College of Wooster. He lives in North Carolina with his wife, son, and their dog.
